Race4Chase Kids’ Fun Run

funrunIn 2012, Chase Kowalski, at age 6, donned number 207 at the Sprint for Monroe 5K with his mom and two sisters.  He had run the kids’ race for several years, but decided he wanted to run the full 5K this time.  He finished the race in 40:18.

After his death at Sandy Hook Elementary, the Sprint for Monroe wanted to honor Chase’s legacy.  The Kowalski family worked with the newly formed Race4Chase Kids’ Fun Run Committee to ensure that this portion of the Sprint would raise funds for their newly formed CMAK Chase Michael Anthony Kowalski Sandy Hook Foundation.  Linda’s Story Time Children’s bookstore generously offered to donate to the title sponsorship of the race, and the Linda’s Story Time Race4Chase Kids’ Fun Run came into being.

Since that first race in 2013, just six months after the tragedy at Sandy Hook, the race has raised over $16,000 for the foundation through race proceeds, sponsorships from local businesses and generous donations from private individuals.

Every year, at the Sprint for Monroe, we retire Chase’s number from 2012 and we post it in our registration area as an honor to his legacy.  We will forever miss one of our youngest 5K runners, and we will always count the Kowalski family part of our Sprint for Monroe family.
